Linux/Unix Specialist (Must have Security Clearance)

Location: Winchester

Day Rate: £450-500

Role Responsibilities:

Responsible for the support of the Clients Linux/Unix infrastructure and platforms ranging from BAU, break/fix, service improvements and project implementation including design input and potentially working with 3rd party suppliers and contractors to ensure that specifications and standards meet Client requirements. They will also be required to take on SME status for key technologies depending on their skillset.

Activities will include but are not limited to:

  • Respond to faults and service outages and complete corrective maintenance in line with Client standards policies and procedures
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of operating policies, processes and procedures
  • Support on going patch management of Linux/Unix infrastructure
  • Implement upgrades and modifications to existing systems and networks
  • To represent IT as a subject matter expert for Linux/Unix related technologies across Client

There is a requirement to participate in the duty engineers on-call 24/7 rota.
The successful candidate may need to undertake travel throughout the UK with the possibility of overnight stays away from home for short periods of time.

Professional or Academic Qualifications:

  • University degree/equivalent or minimum of 5 years equivalent industry/leadership experience
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer – RHCE
  • ITIL v3 Foundation
  • Puppet/Ansible/Chef demonstrable experience
  • Have or is eligible for SC Clearance

Technical Knowledge:


Exceptional working knowledge of Linux/Unix related infrastructures, this includes but is not limited to:

  • Posix operating systems (Redhat Linux 5/6/7, AIX4/5/6)
  • Linux/Unix servers (IBM pSeries, IBM iSeries)
  • Redhat Satellite v5/6/7
  • Linux automation tools (Puppet/Ansible/Chef) in order of preference
  • VMware vSphere (All Versions) and virtual machine principals
  • Excellent scripting/automation exposure
  • Experience in design architecture and documentation (HLD’s & LLD’s)
  • Experience of managing a complex licensing agreement in order to maintain relevant compliance
  • Strong understanding of security principals use or certificates and secure communications


  • Strong understanding of network fundamentals
  • Extensive knowledge of Cloud Based Technologies such as AWS and Azure
  • Experience of working within an ITIL aligned environment
  • Knowledge of JBoss EAP/Fuse, PostgreSQL, and Splunk deployments.
